About the Artist:
Developing his artistic practice while working in South Africa’s mining industry, Duggie du Toit pursued formal training through correspondence studies with art institutions in the United States before dedicating himself to painting. Working primarily in oils, he described his approach as “classical impressionistic”, drawing inspiration from traditional painting techniques and the careful observation of light.
Best known for his still lifes, portraits and figure studies, du Toit’s subjects included fruit, vegetables, books, musical instruments, glassware and timeworn everyday objects. His paintings are distinguished by rich, earthy colour palettes and an emphasis on natural light, often exploring the interplay between illumination, form and texture.
Born in Johannesburg, du Toit spent decades refining a highly recognisable visual language that balanced technical discipline with atmosphere. Rather than pursuing changing artistic trends, he remained committed to a painterly tradition that placed craftsmanship, observation and quality at the centre of his practice.
Today, his works continue to be sought after by collectors of South African art, particularly for their timeless subject matter, strong handling of light, and enduring appreciation of the classical still life tradition.
