About the Artist:
Benjamin Jacobus Davis, known simply as Jacobi, was not shaped by formal institutions or academic studios, but by the South African landscape itself. Entirely self-taught, he developed a style that captured the warmth, light, and atmosphere of the country with remarkable immediacy and feeling.
By 1971, Jacobi was painting full-time, and his evocative coastal scenes and landscapes quickly found an enthusiastic audience among private and corporate collectors in South Africa and abroad. His work became especially admired for its ability to convey not only a place, but the mood and spirit of it: the heat of the afternoon sun, the stillness of the bushveld, the salt-laden air of the coast.
Rich in colour, light, and atmosphere, Jacobi’s paintings possess an authenticity rooted in personal experience rather than academic convention. Exhibited throughout South Africa and held in private collections internationally, his works remain enduring celebrations of the landscapes that inspired him most.
