About the Artist:
Ann Inggs is a South African artist known for her expressive oil paintings of landscapes, street scenes, and historic urban areas across the country. She works primarily in oil, using both brush and palette knife to build texture, light, and movement into her compositions.
She began drawing and painting at a young age and later trained in commercial art, initially working in a photorealistic approach. Seeking a more expressive direction, she studied oils with Carlo Sdoya at the Da Vinci Fine Art School over a period of ten years. During this time, she refined her painterly style and went on to win the Artist of the Year Competition in 1978. She was also a founding member of Artists Under the Sun in 1972, an early milestone in her professional art career.
Her subject matter is strongly rooted in South African life, with recurring scenes of towns, harbours, rural areas, and historically significant locations such as District Six, Stellenbosch, and Fordsburg. These works are not static records but interpretive studies of place, shaped by atmosphere, colour, and the energy of daily life.
Ann’s style is best described as traditional realist with a painterly, expressive quality. Her use of colour is warm and distinctive, often creating a strong sense of light and familiarity that resonates with collectors drawn to scenes of South African heritage and everyday beauty.
Her work is held in private collections and has been widely exhibited through galleries in South Africa.
