About the Artist:
Cecil Thornley Stewart was a South African painter known primarily for his landscapes and coastal scenes. Working during the first half of the twentieth century, he developed a reputation for atmospheric depictions of the South African landscape, particularly rocky shorelines, rivers, trees, and rural scenery.
Stewart worked mainly in oil and is associated with a traditional approach to landscape painting that focused on light, weather, and natural texture rather than modernist experimentation. His paintings often feature carefully observed coastline formations, reflective water surfaces, and an understated use of colour that gives many of his works a quiet sense of place.
